Sharlane drove into the city today and walked with me and Rachele down to Marshall Beach. No naked men today, but plenty of German tourists.

I checked out the "Impressionist Paris: City of Light" exhibit (magnifique!) at the Legion of Honor today, and also walked around the entire Lincoln Park area. It was absolutely beautiful today, and it felt good to be alive! I walked almost 10 miles around the Richmond District and ended with a frozen yogurt from Happy Yogurt (seeing as I was so happy)!

I walked down to Ocean Beach today on Anza, went shopping at the Ocean Beach Safeway, then walked back on Balboa. I thought I was just going to get a few things at the store, but I ended up with a very heavy bag, which I had to haul over 30 blocks home. By the time I got home, my hands were numb, it was almost completely dark, and I was freezing.

Rachele in the Tree Pose

Rachele and I walked down Clement past the Veteran's Hospital, and then walked around Land's End trail (along with hundreds of tourists). We took the detour out to Mile Rock Beach and walked the labyrinth, then came back on Geary.

Alamo Square

I walked by three SF landmarks in the Alamo Square area today. The Westerfeld House (1198 Fulton St.) was built in 1889 by architect Henry Geilfuss as a residence for William Westerfeld, a noted baker and confectioner. This Victorian structure is a great example of a Stick Style Italianate Villa. The Westerfeld House has been at times a boardinghouse, a bed-and-breakfast, a meeting space for the Russian Club, and an apartment house. It is now once again a private residence.

The Archbishop's Mansion (1000 Fulton St.) was built in 1904 for Archbishop Patrick Riordan, after he finished directing the construction of St. Mary's Cathedral. This structure is an example of a Second French Empire Style building, and is a dignified companion to the Victorian buildings that line Alamo Square.

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (858-864 Fulton St.) was constructed in 1880 and is in the German-Renaissance style. In 1930, it was sold to a Russian Orthodox congregation, and then became the principal cathedral of the International Russian Orthodox Church until 1961, when the Russian Orthodox Cathedral was built on Geary St. St. Stephen's continues to serve the Russian community in the neighborhood.

Painted Ladies

Painted Ladies on Steiner

Today I walked down Grove Street to Market, and then back on Fell St. There are lots of Victorians in the Alamo Square area, including the lovely Painted Ladies.

I also swung by McLaren Lodge in Golden Gate Park (SF Landmark #175), which was built in 1896 and originally served as the official residence of the Park Superintendent, the second of whom was John McLaren, who lived there for 53 years. The offices of SF Parks and Rec. are currently located here.
