The San Francisco Columbarium!

The San Francisco Columbarium

I visited the San Francisco Columbarium today, which is a landmark (#209) here in the city. A columbarium is a vault with niches for urns containing ashes of the dead. It's located at the end of Lorraine Ave, which is a hidden cul-de-sac off Anza Avenue. I actually never knew what this building was until today - but now that I know, I'm sure I'll be back - It's very cool.

Supposedly, the remains of Harvey Milk, Chet Helms and many other San Francisco luminaries are located here. The Columbarium was built in 1898, and was originally surrounded by a 167 acre cemetery and crematorium. Changes in San Francisco law forced the removal of the cemetary (to Colma) in the 1920's and 30's, and the Columbarium subsequently fell into disrepair as it passed from one organization to another over the years. In 1980 it was obtained by the Neptune Society and the process of restoration was begun. In 1996, the building was added to the register of San Francisco landmarks.
